This is an interesting strategy from IBM. However, personal view to this is that in order to support this solution, the following factors have to be considered:
1. Access control - How do we ensure that no one is sharing the 3D world or access to the 3D world? this is conducted via the Internet, and it is common that there are many exploits over the Internet. This is very different from physical office whereby access control can be protected by physical security.
2. Infrastructure - How much does a company is willing to pay just to see your oversea colleague as in 3D figure talking to you. I am not interested to see that.
3. Stability - How stable is the flow of communication over the Internet, especially there are audio, visual together. Grid technology will be used in this case? How much?
4. Market adoption - How many companies are using this technology to conduct conference? Maybe tranining in future for education to make it more interesting and lively. If no big player is using that technology, it is too risky to invest in such solution.
